Westhalten and its vineyard

Located at the entrance of the “Noble Valley”, nestled between the hills of the “Strangenberg”, the “Bollenberg” and the “Zinnkoepflé”, Westhalten extends its vineyard on their slopes.

These three hills are unique in Europe: After the last ice ages, about 8000 years ago, Alsace entered a warm and dry period. The Rhine lands are home to a Mediterranean flora and fauna. Insects, reptiles, orchids, baguenaudiers or fraxinelles colonize the whole region.

But a millennium later, a new climatic reversal occurs,
forcing these sensitive species to disappear. For their survival in the Rhine ditch, only one refuge was offered to them: the sub-Vosgesian hills of the Rouffach region and their exceptionally warm and dry micro-climate (for a little, you could hear the cicada there!).

This living procession has been able to maintain itself until today on the arid moors of the Bollenberg, Strangenberg, Zinnkoepflé and is thus unique in Europe: It is a true living relic of a past several millennia old. The multitude of rare species that together make up this ecosystem testifies to the exceptional dimension of this natural heritage, a protected site.

Moreover, their privileged position offers a unique panorama on the Alsace plain and the Swiss Alps. Already celebrated by our pagan ancestors during the ceremonies of the sun cult (from which it takes its name) and always mentioned among the best exhibitions of Alsace, the Zinnkoepflé has firmly established its reputation.
It is the highest vineyard in Alsace (440m); it provides good Pinot gris and Gewurztraminer, and it is an excellent terroir for Sylvaner… Westhalten also has a second grand cru, which it shares with Rouffach: the Vorburg
